Sources
Source library for FERS planning
The primary references used for educational FERS planning content and documented calculation behavior.
Short answer
We use official OPM pages, FAQs, and handbook material whenever possible. Sources help users verify the guidance behind each educational estimate.
We link to official references so you can review the underlying guidance yourself. This site remains independent and educational.

How sources are selected
FERS Planner prefers OPM pages, OPM FAQs, and OPM handbook material for retirement and benefit rules. Secondary explanations should not override official source language.
When a topic changes over time, such as earnings limits or benefit continuation details, the page should be reviewed before the calculator logic is updated.
How sources are used
Sources inform support content and calculation tests. They are not copied into the calculator as loose text or estimated by an AI model.
Calculation behavior belongs in a documented rules module. Support pages explain the concepts and point readers back to the calculator.
Source areas to review
| Planning topic | Primary source area | Review note |
|---|---|---|
| Retirement type | OPM FERS types of retirement | Use this to understand which retirement path a scenario may fit. |
| Annuity computation | OPM FERS computation guidance | Use this to review high-three, service, and formula concepts. |
| Health and life insurance | OPM retirement life-event, FEHB, and FEGLI guidance | Use this to keep benefits questions separate from the income estimate. |
