FERS Postponed vs Deferred Retirement

Postponed and deferred retirement can sound similar, but the timing, separation path, and benefits review questions are different. Frame the decision before using your own dates.

What to gather before you estimate

  • Separation date
  • Annuity start date
  • Age at separation
  • Years of creditable service
  • FEHB and FEGLI questions for the path you are testing

The timing difference

Postponed MRA+10 generally starts with separating after reaching MRA with at least 10 years of service, then delaying the annuity start.

Deferred retirement generally means leaving before immediate retirement eligibility and applying for the annuity later when age and service rules allow.

Why the label matters

The label affects which official questions you should ask about annuity timing, benefit continuation, and paperwork.

If you are unsure which path fits, test the dates in the calculator and treat the result as an educational starting point, not an official determination.
